Arts & Dance Education

For the past 14 years, NBHF has been bringing dance and movement classes to the villages of Ayacucho and San Juan de Yanayacu. This pioneer program has been recognized worldwide for its innovation and impact. The Gazette, the official journal of the Royal Academy of Dancing in London, has published several articles highlighting the program’s success. In 2021, the Nevada Building Hope Foundation Dance Program was honored as one of the number one programs in the world among international dance foundations.

In February 2018, NBHF, Curassow Amazon Lodge and Grand Amazon Lodge expanded their efforts by sponsoring two distinguished dance professors: Silvia Zumaeta del Aguila of Loreto Dance, and Sorella Melina Salazar Braga, Directora de la Escuela Art Dance Perú y Profesora de Ballet Clásico y Danzas both studios are from Iquitos, Peru. These accomplished professionals brought their expertise to Ayacucho and San Juan de Yanayacu, leading dance workshops and laying the foundation for an arts outreach program. Importantly, their work emphasized the NBHF commitment to sustainability, ensuring that programs are both viable and long-lasting.

Today, Silvia and Sorella serve as Board Members of Nevada Building Hope Foundation/Peru, continuing in their missions to bring arts and education to the our communities with passion and dedication.

Abbie Tate

One of the shining examples of this work is Abbie Tate, a Reno, Nevada resident who joined NBHF’s Student Voluntourism Program at the age of 15. For four years, Abbie traveled to the Peruvian Rainforest, where she taught ballet to children in a humble, broken-down communal house. Her dedication was so profound that in 2021, she was featured on the Royal Academy of Dancing’s website during World Ballet Day, seen teaching ballet to the children of Ayacucho village with joy and patience. Today, Abbie is preparing for medical school. Those who know her are certain she will carry her compassion and commitment into her career as a physician, continuing to touch lives with the same love she shared in the Amazon. She has left a lasting mark on the children, whom she inspired during her many visits to the communities.
