Clean Water Project San Juan de Yanayacu
Clean Water Project San Juan de Yanayacu
2024
The people of the jungle are basically healthy and their common health problems seem endemic from the water they drink and the environment they live. Most people living in the river villages do not travel to the medical post for wellness checks. They do not have the money for regular medical checks and unfortunately, most people do not seek medical treatment until they are very ill.
The community of San Juan de Yanayacu is located south of Iquitos in northeast Peru on the Yanayacu River, an offshoot of the Amazon River. San Juan relies on the Yanayacu River for water for cooking, bathing, cleaning, and drinking. There are no water filtration nor disinfection and the community frequently contracts water born illnesses due to pathogens and pollutants in the river. Children are hit the hardest and end up missing school for medical attention. The Rotary Club of Evergreen, Colorado, with the Nevada Building Hope Foundation, JVA Engineers, and the Rotary Club of Iquitos is designing and building water treatment systems to provide the necessary infrastructure.
